Slanguage

Bio

Founded in 2002 in Wilmington, California, known as “the heart of the L.A. harbor,” Slanguage is a socially engaged collective composed of Los Angeles–based artists Mario Ybarra Jr. (b. 1973 Wilmington) and Karla Diaz (b. 1976 Los Angeles), along with various other collaborators. Slanguage has established a unique pedagogical platform that supports the creative projects of local, national, and international cultural producers at all stages of their careers. Approaching their art-making process through a three-tiered platform that includes arts education, community building, and the production of interactive exhibitions, Slanguage conceives meaningful projects for local communities that are also responsive to global events. As a way to showcase its creative economy of artistic production, the collective is activating one of the sites of Made in L.A., LA><ART, over the duration of the exhibition. Through a site-specific billboard on the building’s facade and a public billboard on La Cienega Boulevard, as well as the myriad workshops, performances, and public programs that it is hosting, the group is cultivating relationships with LA><ART’s surrounding communities and encouraging exchanges among diverse audiences. Slanguage’s installation in LA><ART’s main gallery presents a selection of the projects and activities that the collective has produced internationally over the past decade.
