Morgan Fisher
Bio
After attending film school in Los Angeles in the 1960s, Morgan Fisher (b. 1942 Washington, D.C.) worked as a commercial film editor and later began making short experimental films that expose processes of the film trade that are typically kept behind the scenes, such as editing and storyboarding. Since the 1990s Fisher has produced a number of highly conceptual bodies of painting that offer alternatives to what he calls “painting as usual.” Avoiding decisions that would result in visible signs of expressivity, he derives his compositions from existing structures or systems. Several of his recent projects have been contingent upon architecture, challenging the notion that paintings are singular, autonomous objects designed to be moved from one location to another. For Made in L.A., he has created this site-specific work. Inspired equally by the rigor of conceptual art and the richness of Renaissance frescoes, Fisher’s work occupies two walls and a ceiling—the geometry determined by sight lines from nearby columns—and can be viewed in its entirety only from the corner.
