Laura Riboli

Bio

In her videos Laura Riboli (b. 1973 Los Angeles) explores particulars of shape, surface, and movement and how they inform our understanding of objects. She suggests that this knowledge comes from a somatic relation, a morphological identification with our own bodies, as well as from a sensory memory of material—for example, perceiving rigidity or softness. In this sense her videos attune viewers to sculptural concerns, though by a novel inversion: rather than inviting us to circulate around an object, she animates each object, revealing its character in the process. Riboli uses stop-motion videography to expressive and often humorous effect. The lo-fi mechanical means by which she enacts her quirky dramas further emphasize human rather than ideal associations. Her new moving-image work represents a suite of studies of the body addressing the passivity of spectatorship as an “orphaned” human body, locating the present as it is experienced physically and accentuating differences between the body as image and the body as event, with its implied limitations.
